Built between 1482 and 1548, this masterpiece of civil Gothic architecture is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
In the 15th century, Valencia was one of the richest trading ports in Europe, and silk was its gold.
Inside, the Hall of Columns rises like a stone forest, with helical pillars 17 meters high.
Above the entrance appears an inscription in Latin:
“Domine, indica mihi viam” — “Lord, show me the way.”
Beneath the main hall is a prison for dishonest merchants who failed to honor their contracts.
It is a monument not only to architecture, but also to honesty in commerce and the wealth that Valencia built.
